to Yzerfontein – is all you need to escape the city’s confines. This West Coast
fishing village, with its small-craft harbour, epitomises relaxation under the sun:
boating, hiking, mountain biking, golf, surfing, fishing, day tours, birdwatching and
entertaining.
But not at the expense of the amenities you’ve come to rely on. With a Spar
supermarket, petrol station, major bank ATMs, restaurants, a doctor,
telecommunications infrastructure and good mobile-network phone and data
coverage, the village lets you get on with what’s important. A country drive of
20 km away, the town of Darling offers a theatre, its own micro-brewery, banks,
supermarkets, a pharmacy and schools, including the independent Darling College.

Bayside Mall is 30 minutes away to the south. Or enjoy the variety of heading north
to Langebaan or Vredenburg for malls, car dealerships and private hospitals. To
the south, you’ll find the Netcare Blaauwberg private hospital on the Yzerfontein
road itself, a 116-bed facility on Cape Town’s edge with a helipad for airlifts and full
intensive care, maternity care, specialist doctors and medical and surgical facilities.
All of which may be furthest from your mind as enjoy Yzerfontein’s crayfish and barracuda bounty in a gentle climate. Here, temperatures seldom dip below 10° C in winter and hover comfortably in the mid-to-high twenties through summer. Perfect conditions for exploring the nearby Langebaan Lagoon, West Coast National Park and !Khwa ttu San Education and Cultural Centre, which offers guided tours of indigenous San heritage and exciting big-game viewing. Or for making 16 Mile Beach your playground, under wide, blue African skies.
